ALNO AG achieves positive EBIT in first half of 2008

Pfullendorf-based ALNO AG has reached an important milestone in its
thorough restructuring program. Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT)
adjusted for restructuring costs rose to EUR 1.5m in the first six months
of 2008, compared to EUR -8.8m in the first half of 2007. The last positive
EBIT was achieved in 2005. This result comes despite a 13.2% fall in
turnover to EUR 264.8m (H1 2007: EUR 305.2m). The fall in turnover is due
to a weakness in demand in the consumer goods market since the start of the
year, particularly in Germany, and the company’s decision not to accept
orders that result in unprofitable turnover. In contrast, the gross profit
only fell by 5.9%. This reflects the success of the price and cost measures
on the materials side. The gross profit ratio rose 3.2% to 42.2% (H1 2007:
39.0%).

In total, the group incurred restructuring costs of EUR 0.3m in the first
half of 2008. The pre-tax income (EBT) of EUR –5.1m was EUR 15.7m higher
than last year’s EBT for the same period (EUR –20.8m). The consolidated net
earnings for the first six months of the year were EUR –4.3m, which
represents an improvement of EUR 18.4m (H1 2007: EUR –22.7m). The group
reduced costs considerably over this period by reducing its personnel to
1901 employees (H1 2007: 2494).

Now that the restructuring program is essentially complete, ALNO AG is
concentrating on pushing ahead on the path of profitable growth through
various measures. These include continuing to sharpen the profile of the
ALNO brand, accelerating the expansion of its foreign activities, and
presenting new and attractive products under the ALNO, WELLMANN, IMPULS and
PINO brands at the trade fair in September.

For 2008 as a whole, ALNO AG confirms its target of achieving break-even at
the EBIT level before restructuring costs and extraordinary items.
