DHL takes over Canadian courier service Loomis - Deutsche Post World Net extends its global network - Expansion into North American ground business

DHL Worldwide Express is to take over Mayne Group Canada, one of Canada’s leading express courier services, on 31 January 2003. Upon completion of the DHL takeover, Deutsche Post World Net will be well-positioned to significantly pursue its global growth strategy. With the acquisition of Loomis, the Group strengthens its targeted presence in in the attractive North American overland express delivery market.

The take-over of the company, known in Canada as Mayne Logistics Loomis, represents another milestone in DHL’s fast-growing ground business. Already at the beginning of next year, the express courier will offer a new ground service in the USA, which will be involved in both domestic and crossborder activities. The first pilot tests are already underway. Loomis presents an ideal complement for this service. In Europe, too, DHL will significantly strengthen its ground business presence: The group’s European parcel network will in the future operate under the uniform brand of DHL.

Loomis’ ranking as number 3 on the Canadian market will be an important factor in DHL’s further expansion of its market share in that country as well as its enhancement of its cross-border services to the USA. DHL’s air express service is optimally complemented by Loomis, with its focus on ground transport. Mayne Group Canada is the Canadian logistics subsidiary of Mayne Group Ltd., Australia’s leading service provider for the manufacture and marketing of medical products. With around 3,000 staff and annual revenues of approximately EUR 180m, Mayne offers courier and express services within Canada and around the world. The finalization of the agreement is subject to the standard approval by the Canadian competition authority.
